Tems’ debut album, “Born In The Wild,” has been released, featuring 18 tracks and collaborations with Asake on “Get It Right” and J. Cole on “Free Fall,” offering a rich and diverse musical experience.
The album is a personal journey for Tems, as she explained to Apple Music, detailing her need to step back and heal from past traumas, unlearn old patterns, and find a new way to express herself while staying true to her identity.
The themes in the album revolve around self-doubt, self-discovery, relationship navigation, and ultimately, self-trust, showcasing her growth and readiness for the future.
Musically, “Born In The Wild” spans various genres, from sultry R&B in “Burning” to a blend of Afrobeats and amapiano in “Get It Right,” celebrating African culture and heritage.
This celebration is further highlighted by her reimagining of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 hit, “Love Me JeJe,” into a modern and breezy version.
Tems has built anticipation for the album since her Coachella announcement. She released “Love Me JeJe” and delivered a soulful performance of it along with the title track on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Her recent Tiny Desk performance also captivated audiences with standout tracks like “Me & U,” “Ice T,” “Unfortunate,” and “Forever.” This new chapter in Tems’ career promises raw vulnerability, sonic exploration, and a strong, conquering spirit.
