On April 3, 2025, key figures from Nigeria’s vibrant music industry gathered at the residence of the Acting United States Consular General in Lagos for a special dinner event celebrating the premiere of the 17th edition of The Headies.

This prestigious event saw the convergence of music industry stakeholders, including Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, captains of various industries, influential music executives, and prominent media personalities.

The gathering marked the highly anticipated return of The Headies to Nigeria after a two-year hiatus abroad, a moment of great pride and excitement for the country’s music scene.

During the evening, Acting Consul General JoEllen Gorg expressed her admiration for the global success of Afrobeats, particularly in the United States, where Nigerian artists have made a significant impact. She highlighted the immense achievements of stars like Burna Boy, who has managed to sell out historic venues across the US.

“The rise of Afrobeats, and its resounding success, particularly in the US, is something truly remarkable,” Gorg remarked. “Artists like Burna Boy are not just making waves—they’re creating history by selling out venues that have seen generations of legendary musicians.” Her words reinforced the international recognition that Nigerian music continues to garner, positioning it as a global force in contemporary music.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, also took a moment to celebrate the cultural significance of Afrobeats as one of Nigeria’s premier exports. “Afrobeats is undeniably one of Nigeria’s foremost global exports,” she noted.

“Lagos is proud to host the country’s most prestigious music award ceremony, and we stand ready to support the continued growth and success of the Nigerian music industry.”

Her words were a reflection of Lagos’ role as a key player in shaping the international profile of Nigerian music, with the state offering a rich platform for the celebration of local talent.

The Headies 17th edition, which has been aptly titled “Back To Base,” promises to be a grand return to its roots, offering a chance to recognize and reward excellence in Nigerian music. According to Executive Producer Mr. Ayo Animashahun, this year’s edition will be bigger and better than ever before.

“We’re bringing it back to the people, to the heart of Nigerian music,” Animashahun said in his address. “The 17th edition of The Headies is all about celebrating the true essence of Nigerian music, rewarding the stars who have shaped the industry into what it is today.” The excitement surrounding the event was palpable, with attendees eager to see how this edition would surpass previous years.

Several nominees for the 17th Headies were also present at the event, adding to the anticipation for the upcoming ceremony. Among them was iconic hip-hop artist Illbliss, who was nominated for the Rap Album of the Year.

Illbliss, a long-standing figure in the Nigerian music scene, joined fellow nominees like rising star Taves and singer Brown Joel.
