Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, has been released from prison after appeal judges decided against a retrial for his murder charge. Kartel, who was jailed in 2014 for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams, has always maintained his innocence.
His conviction was overturned by UK judges in March, but Jamaican authorities had been considering a retrial. On Wednesday, Jamaican appeal judges decided not to pursue the case further, leading to Kartel’s release.
Kartel’s 2014 trial heard that Williams and another man, Lamar Chow, were attacked at Kartel’s house after failing to return unlicensed firearms.
Chow testified that Williams was seen motionless before disappearing. The house burned down shortly after, and Williams’ body was never found.
Kartel, along with co-accused Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, with Kartel facing a minimum of 35 years.

After exhausting appeals in Jamaica, Kartel took his case to the Privy Council in London, which found that the trial was compromised by a juror accused of attempting to bribe others, making the conviction unsafe.
Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop cited the “egregious nature” of the offense, the time passed, lack of evidence and witnesses, and Kartel’s declining health as reasons against a retrial.
The judges concluded that justice did not require a new trial, formally acquitting Kartel and his co-defendants. The decision was met with heavy security and significant public interest in Kingston, Jamaica’s capital.
Kartel, one of Jamaica’s most popular artists, has collaborated with major performers like Jay-Z, Eminem, and Rihanna. Known for hits such as “Clarks,” “Ramping Shop,” and “Summer Time,” Kartel also launched product lines and starred in his reality TV show “Teacha’s Pet.”
Seani B, presenter of 1Xtra’s Dancehall Show, described Kartel’s release as significant for Jamaica, dancehall music, and the judicial system. Seani noted that Kartel’s fame has grown during his imprisonment and that a new generation of fans eagerly awaits his return to music.
He also acknowledged the mixed emotions, considering the unresolved murder case and the impact on the victim’s family.
