The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) projects that its “Beyond the Return” programs in 2024 will generate over $3 billion in revenue, signaling strong growth in the tourism sector. This follows the success of the “Year of Return” in 2019, which brought in approximately 1.9 billion cedis from over 900,000 visitors.
Speaking to JoyNews, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Akwesi Agyemang, expressed confidence that Ghana will host at least 1.3 million tourists in the second half of 2024. With nearly 600,000 visitors already recorded in the first half, the second half is expected to see a significant increase, especially in the last quarter.
Agyemang highlighted efforts to strengthen Ghana’s appeal in international markets, particularly in the U.K., which ranks third in tourism arrivals after Nigeria. Through partnerships and targeted promotions, Ghana aims to attract even more visitors and boost the tourism sector’s contribution to the economy.
The expected revenue from tourism is anticipated to reach approximately 3.8 billion cedis, presenting opportunities for the private sector to capitalize on the increasing tourist influx.
Additionally, Agyemang assured that key event centers, including the National Theatre, will undergo renovations to enhance their appeal to tourists and event organizers. He acknowledged past issues with air conditioning at the theatre but noted that the ministry has recently received new units.
With these upgrades, the Ghana Tourism Authority hopes to raise the standard of its facilities and provide a better experience for both local and international visitors.
