Onyeka Onwenu, the renowned Nigerian music icon affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” will be laid to rest today in Lagos.
Onwenu, who passed away at the age of 72 on July 30, 2024, died at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja after collapsing during an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
Her death marks the end of a prolific career that spanned music, broadcasting, acting, politics, and activism, where she made a significant impact both within Nigeria and beyond.
The funeral arrangements for Onyeka Onwenu, as announced by her family, include a service at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, followed by a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi.
The Service of Songs is scheduled from 10 am to 12 noon, with the burial taking place between 2 pm and 4 pm. These ceremonies are expected to be attended by many who admired her work and contributions to Nigerian culture.

Throughout her life, Onyeka Onwenu was celebrated not just for her musical talent, which produced numerous hits, but also for her versatility and dedication to various causes.
She was a prominent broadcaster, a passionate actress, an active politician, and a committed activist, using her platform to influence and inspire.
Her legacy lives on through her body of work and the impact she had on those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her two sons, who, along with the nation, mourn the loss of a beloved and iconic figure in Nigerian history.
