The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has announced that it received and classified a total of 274 movies produced by the Nigerian film industry in the first quarter of the year. Dr. Shaibu Husseini, the Executive Director/CEO of the board, revealed this in a statement released on Monday in Abuja.

The figure, provided by the Department of Film Censorship and Classification, encompasses all genres of films approved by the board and is part of the first quarter report to be submitted to relevant Federal Government agencies for the compilation of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product for Q1 2024.

According to the report, a significant portion of the films produced during this period were in the English language, totaling 250 out of the verified and approved films. Additionally, there were films in other languages such as Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Hindi.

Classification based on the viewing audience revealed that films rated ’18’, intended for mature audiences, constituted over 50 percent of the total films produced. Films rated ’15’, ’12’, those requiring Parental Guidance (PG), and those under ‘General viewing’ trailed behind accordingly.

NFVCB, a Federal Government agency tasked with regulating the film and video industry in Nigeria, has the authority to classify all films and videos, whether imported or locally produced.

The board is also responsible for registering all films and video outlets across the country and maintaining a register of such outlets, among other functions.
