Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Darrin Bell has been arrested on suspicion of possessing and uploading child sexual abuse videos, including some generated using artificial intelligence.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reported that they had received an alert from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which flagged 18 files of child sex abuse material being uploaded to an online account.
Upon investigation, officers discovered a total of 134 videos of such material linked to the same account, which they stated was owned and controlled by Bell, who is 49 years old.
The discovery led to a search warrant being executed at his residence in California on Wednesday.
During the search, police recovered additional evidence, including computer-generated child sex abuse material.
Bell was subsequently arrested and is being held on suspicion of uploading and possessing child sex abuse material. His bail has been set at $1 million.
Bell appeared in court on Friday, where the charges were formally addressed.
