Known for his extraordinary artistry and global influence, Shklyarov’s death was announced by the St. Petersburg company, with reports indicating he fell from the fifth floor of a building while on painkillers.

Shklyarov, who was married to fellow Mariinsky dancer Maria Shklyarov and had two children, was a celebrated figure in ballet. Born in Leningrad, he trained at the prestigious Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, graduating in 2003 before joining the Mariinsky Theatre the same year.
Over two decades, he became a principal dancer in 2011 and dazzled audiences with lead performances in productions such as Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and Romeo and Juliet. His talent and dedication earned him opportunities to perform on world-class stages, including the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Beyond his work with the Mariinsky, Shklyarov also contributed to the global ballet scene as a guest artist with the American Ballet Theatre in 2014 and 2015. Tributes from the company highlighted his grace, passion, and ability to inspire audiences worldwide.
