The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards took place at UBS Arena in New York, featuring a star-studded lineup of performers, including LL Cool J, Eminem, Shawn Mendes, Katy Perry, and Megan Thee Stallion, who also hosted the show.
The event saw standout performances from artists like Karol G, Camila Cabello, Anitta, and more, with many electrifying the stage. Eminem’s performance of “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me” was notable for its homage to his iconic 2000 VMAs appearance, featuring an army of lookalikes.
Taylor Swift emerged as the night’s biggest winner, taking home seven awards, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Summer. Swift made history by surpassing Beyoncé’s record for most solo VMA wins, with a total of 30 moonmen.
She also became the first artist to win Video of the Year five times. Other notable winners included Post Malone, who secured five wins for his feature on Swift’s “Fortnight,” while Tyla, Megan Thee Stallion, and Eminem each took home two moonmen.
Post Malone, Eminem, and Tyla shared the spotlight with impressive wins, with Eminem claiming Best Hip-Hop and Best Visual Effects for “Houdini.” Megan Thee Stallion won Best Art Direction and Best Trending Video for “Mamushi,” while Tyla secured Best New Artist and Best Afrobeats for her hit “Water.”
Despite being a VMA regular, Beyoncé did not win any awards this year, despite her recent success with “Cowboy Carter.”
The evening’s performances were dynamic, with Katy Perry delivering a medley of her hits for the Video Vanguard Award. Camila Cabello gave a selfie-style rendition of “Godspeed,” while Sabrina Carpenter took the audience to outer space, performing songs from her album “Short n’ Sweet.”
Carpenter’s performance featured an astronaut-themed choreography, making it one of the visual highlights of the night.
Chappell Roan brought a medieval theme to her performance of “Good Luck Babe,” complete with armor, a crossbow, and a castle backdrop.
Anitta collaborated with Fat Joe and DJ Khaled for a performance of their new track “Paradise” before switching to a duet with Tiago PZK for “Alegría.”
Shawn Mendes debuted his new song “Nobody Knows,” while Halsey and Rauw Alejandro also premiered new music during the event.
Additional performances from artists like Lenny Kravitz, GloRilla, and Benson Boone kept the energy high throughout the night.
Teddy Swims and Jessie Murph performed their hits during commercial interludes, adding to the evening’s impressive lineup.
The event concluded with excitement around the performances and record-breaking wins, solidifying its place as one of the year’s biggest nights in music.
